Tottenham join race to sign Brighton star Carlos Baleba

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, with Roberto De Zerbi reportedly placing the Cameroonian midfielder high on his summer wishlist — but Spurs face stiff competition from Manchester United, according to The Independent.

De Zerbi’s Midfield Mission

Having steered Tottenham away from relegation this season, De Zerbi is now focused on a serious squad overhaul. A new midfielder is firmly on the agenda, and Baleba fits the profile the Italian is targeting.

The 22-year-old joined Brighton from LOSC Lille in 2023 and, after an initial settling-in period, delivered six goal contributions in 40 appearances last season. His form dipped this term, yet he still played his part as the Seagulls secured Conference League football for next year.

Brighton’s £100m Asking Price

Don’t expect Brighton to make this easy. With Baleba contracted until 2028, the Seagulls have reportedly slapped a £100 million price tag on the defensive midfielder — a figure that reflects their well-known reluctance to sell key assets cheaply.

The Man Utd Factor

Manchester United are serious rivals here. With Casemiro leaving on a free and Manuel Ugarte’s future uncertain, United desperately need midfield reinforcements this summer. Baleba ticks several boxes.

Meanwhile, Spurs are also monitoring Yves Bissouma’s situation — should he depart, a replacement becomes even more urgent.

Verdict

Baleba is precisely the kind of box-to-box defensive midfielder capable of transforming a midfield. At just 22, his best years are ahead of him. Whether it’s Spurs or United who land him, that £100m fee will need serious justification — but the talent is undeniably there.
