Tottenham Hotspur eye Kyle Walker-Peters return amid Chelsea interest

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly plotting a sensational move to bring Kyle Walker-Peters back to North London — but they’ll have to fend off Chelsea in the race for his signature.

According to CaughtOffside, Spurs boss Thomas Frank is a long-time admirer of the Southampton full-back and wants to add him to his defensive ranks this summer. With Walker-Peters’ contract expiring at the end of the month, the 28-year-old is set to become a free agent — and a bargain pick-up for any Premier League side.

A return to familiar territory?

Walker-Peters came through the Tottenham academy and made his senior debut in 2017, but struggled to cement a regular place in the first team. After a brief loan spell, he made a permanent move to Southampton in 2020 — a decision that proved to be a career-defining one.

Since joining the Saints, the England international has developed into a reliable and consistent performer, capable of playing on both flanks. Despite Southampton’s relegation last season, Walker-Peters was one of the few standout players in a struggling side.

Versatility and experience appeal to Thomas Frank

With Spurs aiming to bolster their full-back options, Walker-Peters ticks multiple boxes. Not only is he homegrown — which helps meet Premier League registration criteria — but he also brings Premier League experience, tactical flexibility, and strong work ethic.

Thomas Frank is believed to be keen on adding depth to his backline, with Walker-Peters viewed as ideal competition for Pedro Porro on the right and cover for Destiny Udogie on the left. His ability to operate as a wing-back or traditional full-back suits the fluid system Frank is expected to implement.

Chelsea also in the hunt

Tottenham, however, are not alone. Chelsea have also shown serious interest in the former Spurs defender. While the Blues typically pursue younger talents, Walker-Peters’ free-agent status and top-flight experience have caught the eye of new manager Enzo Maresca, who values squad depth ahead of a demanding season.

Verdict

For Spurs, re-signing Kyle Walker-Peters could be a smart, low-risk move that strengthens both their squad and homegrown core. But with Chelsea circling, Daniel Levy and co. may need to move fast if they want to bring their academy graduate back home.
