Man Utd weighing January move for Dani Vivian
Manchester United are reportedly setting their sights on Athletic Club defender Dani Vivian, with Spanish outlet Fichajes claiming the 26-year-old has emerged as a serious transfer target.
United’s defensive situation is far from straightforward. While Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Luke Shaw have started all three Premier League games so far, their depth has been tested. In the Carabao Cup, Tyler Fredricson, Harry Maguire, and Ayden Heaven featured in a shock penalty shootout defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town — a stark reminder that reinforcements may be needed.
Why United Want Vivian
Manager Ruben Amorim has several centre-back options, including Lisandro Martínez and Noussair Mazraoui, but long-term concerns remain. Maguire’s contract expires next summer, while Fredricson and Heaven are still developing. On top of that, Martínez and Shaw have both been plagued by injuries, leaving Amorim eager to bolster his backline, particularly with his preference for a back-three system.

That’s where Vivian comes in. The Spaniard has caught the eye in La Liga with a string of strong performances, establishing himself as a key figure for Athletic and earning a place in Spain’s national squad. Crucially, he has a £35m release clause in his contract — a figure United could be tempted to trigger.
Premier League Competition
United won’t have it all their way, though. Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also monitoring Vivian closely, and both clubs have the financial muscle to compete for his signature. Athletic Club are desperate to keep their homegrown talent, but the release clause leaves them powerless if a Premier League side makes a move.
Vivian, who made his first-team debut in 2021 after progressing through Athletic’s academy, is admired for his composure in possession and tactical intelligence. However, questions remain over whether he can adapt to the Premier League’s physicality — a challenge that could define his success should he trade La Liga for England.
